In the film, scientists extract dinosaur DNA from prehistoric mosquitoes preserved in amber and use it to create living dinosaurs for an island theme park. However, the dinosaurs prove to be less tractable than predicted. They escape from their enclosures and begin attacking the humans, creating chaos on the island. The film serves as a warning about the revival of extinct species—a process known as de-extinction.

At the time of the film’s release, the possibility of de-extinction seemed fantastical. Subsequent advances in technology, however, have made that possibility a growing reality. In 2003, for example, a team of scientists used preserved DNA to create a clone of an extinct species of goat called the bucardo. Although the clone died shortly after birth, the event marked the first documented case of de-extinction.With the advent of de-extinction came increased debate about the responsible use of genetic engineering technology. Many researchers lauded the team’s efforts to reintroduce the species, but others denounced this work, echoing the message from Jurassic Park: nature is unpredictable, and it may be unwise to tamper with it.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

People with Parkinson’s Disease often suffer from tremors, or uncontrollable shaking. Tremors vary widely in intensity and disruptiveness; some are barely perceptible, while others are so severe that they interfere with patients’ ability to feed themselves. The invention of an eating utensil designed to give tremor sufferers some help during mealtimes has been a tremendous boon for Parkinson’s patients.

The spoon, called Liftware, was created by Anupam Pathak, a skilled engineer with a background in rifle stabilisation technology. Pathak’s design was based largely on such technology. Liftware first uses a motion sensor to detect all movements made by the user. A specially designed algorithm then determines whether each movement is intentional or caused by a tremor. Finally, the head of the spoon moves in response to each tremor to compensate somewhat for the displacement the tremor causes. With the effects of their tremors mitigated in this way, Parkinson’s patients are able to feed themselves with greater ease.

Currently the most sophisticated tool of its kind, the Liftware spoon has received accolades from Parkinson’s patients who appreciate its usefulness and convenience. Because of these positive reviews, Pathak and his team are planning to develop other tools, including a soup spoon, a fork and a key holder. It is their hope that Liftware technology will help Parkinson’s patients and other tremor sufferers lead healthier, happier, and more independent lives.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

In the early 1900s, a schoolteacher named Wilhelm von Osten captivated audiences in Germany with the feats of his trained horse, Hans. Von Osten claimed that Hans could tell time, count objects and even do basic arithmetic. When asked to find the sum of five and three, for instance, Hans would provide the correct answer by tapping his hoof on the ground eight times. Those who witnessed von Osten’s demonstrations began to extol Hans’s intelligence. They dubbed the horse Clever Hans and raved about his extraordinary mental reasoning abilities.

To determine whether Hans’s performance was simply a ruse, the German board of education sent a team of scientists to observe von Osten and his horse. The team concluded that there were no tricks involved in the horse’s shows. However, Oskar Pfungst, a psychologist associated with the team, eventually realised that Hans did not possess any mathematical acumen. Instead, he was just picking up on subtle changes in people’s body language and using these cues to arrive at the correct number of taps. Pfungst showed that people tend to make faint movements, such as tilting their heads slightly upward, when they expect to hear a certain answer. This propensity to provide unconscious behavioural clues has become known as the Clever Hans effect. Scientists are now very careful to take this effect into consideration when designing experiments.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

In the summer of 1978, a group of geologists stumbled upon a tiny, dilapidated homestead in a remote and otherwise unoccupied corner of Siberia. Upon further investigation, the researchers discovered that the crumbling cabin and overgrown garden were home to a family of five. Karp Lykov, his wife Akulina and their children had fled to this desolate region in 1936 in order to escape religious persecution.

In the intervening decades, the Lykovs had eked out a meagre existence for themselves. They subsisted on their crops and on hunted game whenever possible, but they were often forced to forage for berries and pine nuts to stay alive. This uncertain lifestyle eventually took its toll: in 1961, after a summer snowstorm destroyed the year’s harvest, Akulina died of starvation.

Wanting to help the family, the geologists made numerous gifts of seeds, clothing, utensils and other goods. This largesse was lost on Karp Lykov and his older children, who maintained a deep distrust of all things modern and were very timid around outsiders. His younger son and daughter, Dmitry and Agafia, were not nearly so diffident. They were fascinated and delighted by the technologies—like torches and television—that had been invented during their forty years of isolation. Ultimately, however, the Lykovs chose to pass up the comforts of modernity and live out the rest of their natural lives in the Siberian wilderness.

QUIZ START

Read the passage and then answer the question.

In early 2011, Dr John Sparks and his team at the American Museum of Natural History went on a dive off the coast of Little Cayman Island to photograph biofluorescent corals. When they studied the resulting photographs, Dr Sparks and his colleagues found something surprising: a biofluorescent eel. Although many sea creatures are bioluminescent—capable of producing light through a chemical reaction—this was the first time one had been found that could biofluoresce, or absorb and re-emit preexisting light. The discovery of the eel was only the beginning for Dr Sparks and his team. Subsequent trips to the Bahamas and the Solomon Islands eventually revealed over 180 fish species capable of transmuting the blue light of the ocean into brilliant red, green and orange hues.

For these discoveries to be seen, Dr Sparks and his colleagues first had to address a significant technical conundrum presented by the unique properties of biofluorescence. The light that biofluorescent creatures emit is not visible to the human eye. As a result, biofluorescence is impossible to photograph using traditional methods and equipment. The scientists ultimately decided to shine a high-energy blue light on the fish they were attempting to photograph. This light mimicked the light of the ocean and triggered the fish’s biofluorescence. The researchers also outfitted their camera lens with a specially designed filter that removed the unwanted blue light from the image, allowing the fluorescent light to be more clearly seen.

Further research by Dr Sparks and his team has revealed that many biofluorescent fish rely on similar filters. These filters, like internal camera filters, allow fish to perceive the biofluorescent patterns on other sea creatures. Why exactly these patterns are important has yet to be determined. However, Dr Sparks has presented a cogent theory, which has been well received among his peers. His compelling hypothesis is that the patterns play an important role in within-species communication.

QUIZ START

Use context to identify the meaning of a word 9th Class – U.3 Use Context To Identify The Meaning Of A Word by Delta publications Key Notes: What are Context Clues?
