Formatting titles

Key Notes:

Capitalize Important Words
  • Always capitalize the first and last word in a title.
  • Capitalize major words such as nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
    Example: ➡️ The Secret Life of Bees
Don’t Capitalize Short Words
  • Do not capitalize articles (a, an, the), prepositions (in, on, at, of, to), or conjunctions (and, but, or) unless they are the first or last word.
    Example: ➡️ A Walk in the Park
Use Italics or Underline for Big Works
  • Use italics (or underline if handwritten) for long works such as:
    • 📖 Books
    • 🎬 Movies
    • 🎵 Albums
    • 📰 Newspapers or Magazines
      Example: ➡️ To Kill a Mockingbird or To Kill a Mockingbird
Use Quotation Marks for Short Works
  • Use quotation marks (” “) for shorter works, such as:
    • 🧾 Articles
    • 🎶 Songs
    • 🖋️ Poems
    • 📺 TV Episodes
      Example: ➡️ “A Dream Within a Dream”
Be Consistent
  • Choose one style (italics or underline) and use it throughout your writing.
    Good: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
    🚫 Bad: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
Title Case Format

Follow the Title Case Rule:

Capitalize First + Last + Important Words
Example: The Wind in the Willows

Avoid All Caps or All Lowercase
  • Don’t write titles in ALL CAPS or all lowercase.
    🚫 Example: the great gatsby
