Rewrite the sentence in active voice

key notes :

  • Active Voice: The subject of the sentence performs the action.
Example: “The teacher explains the lesson.”
  • Passive Voice: The subject of the sentence receives the action.
Example: “The lesson is explained by the teacher.”

  • In passive voice, the object of the action becomes the subject.
  • The verb often includes a form of “be” (am, is, are, was, were, etc.) + past participle of the main verb.
  • The doer of the action (agent) is often introduced by the word “by.”

  • Step 1: Identify the subject, verb, and object in the sentence.
  • Step 2: Make the object of the passive sentence the subject of the active sentence.
  • Step 3: Make the subject of the passive sentence (the agent) the object of the active sentence, or omit it if it’s not necessary.
  • Step 4: Change the verb to the appropriate active form.

  • Passive Voice: “The homework was completed by the students.”
  • Active Voice: “The students completed the homework.”
  • Passive Voice: “The report was written by Jane.”
  • Active Voice: “Jane wrote the report.”

  • Not all passive sentences can be easily rewritten in active voice if the doer of the action is unknown or irrelevant.
  • Focus on the subject and the action to maintain clarity and correctness when converting.

  • “The cake was baked by her.” → “She baked the cake.”
  • “The letter was posted by Tom.” → “Tom posted the letter.”
  • “The meeting was scheduled by the manager.” → “The manager scheduled the meeting.”
