Identify sentences with parallel structure

key notes :

Parallel structure (also known as parallelism) means using the same pattern of words to show that two or more ideas have the same level of importance.

  • It makes sentences clearer and easier to read.
  • It improves the flow and rhythm of writing.
  • It helps balance ideas in a sentence.

Look for items in a list or series and check if they follow the same grammatical form (verbs, nouns, phrases, etc.).

  1. Use the same verb form (tense):
She likes dancing, to swim, and bikes.
She likes dancing, swimming, and biking.
  2. Use the same type of phrase:
He wanted to win the game, practicing hard, and be famous.
He wanted to win the game, to practice hard, and to be famous.
  3. Use consistent structure in comparisons or correlative pairs:
    (Examples: either…or, neither…nor, not only…but also)
She is not only smart but also kind.

  • List of nouns:
I bought apples, oranges, and bananas.
  • List of verbs:
He runs, jumps, and swims every day.
  • Infinitive phrases:
She likes to read, to write, and to paint.
