Form the progressive verb tenses

Key Notes:

  • Progressive verb tenses indicate ongoing actions. They are formed using a form of the verb “to be” and the present participle of the main verb (the -ing form).

  • Present Progressive:
    • Form: am/is/are + present participle (verb + -ing)
    • Example: She is studying for her exams.
  • Past Progressive:
    • Form: was/were + present participle
    • Example: They were playing soccer when it started to rain.
  • Future Progressive:
    • Form: will be + present participle
    • Example: I will be attending the conference next week.

  • Present Progressive:
    • To describe an action happening right now.
    • To indicate a temporary action.
    • To talk about future arrangements.
  • Past Progressive:
    • To describe an action that was ongoing in the past.
    • To set the scene for another action in the past.
  • Future Progressive:
    • To indicate an action that will be ongoing at a specific time in the future.

  • Present Progressive:
    • They are watching a movie.
  • Past Progressive:
    • She was reading a book when the power went out.
  • Future Progressive:
    • At this time tomorrow, I will be traveling to Paris.

  • Present Progressive: am/is/are + not + present participle
    • Example: He is not working today.
  • Past Progressive: was/were + not + present participle
    • Example: We were not playing outside.
