Unit rates

key notes :

A unit rate is a comparison of two different quantities where one of the quantities is expressed as a value of 1. It is the ratio of two measurements in which the denominator is 1.

To find the unit rate, divide the first quantity by the second quantity and express the result per 1 unit of the second quantity.

Example:
If a car travels 180 miles in 3 hours, the unit rate would be:

  • Speed: Miles per hour (mi/hr) or kilometers per hour (km/h).
  • Price: Cost per item or cost per unit (e.g., dollars per liter, dollars per kilogram).
  • Density: People per square mile or students per class.
  • Efficiency: Fuel efficiency is miles per gallon (mpg) or kilometers per liter (km/l).
